There is really something… perfect?… to be said for the enjoyment of a hot tub during the winter months. You get to be out in the beauty and stillness that winter brings without freezing your tushy off while you enjoy it.
But, let’s be straight, running a hot tub in the winter can kick your energy costs up a few notches if you’re not careful. So, in order to make that year-round hot tub bliss a thing, here are some recommendations for reducing the winter energy costs associated.

Reduce the Temperature

Because it’s colder outside, your hot tub heater is going to have to work harder and longer to keep the water warm for you. Here’s the thing, though: because of the colder outdoor temperatures, you probably won’t even notice the difference if you were to turn down the heat on your hot tub during the winter. A hot tub at 105 degrees on a 70 degree night in August is going to feel basically the same as a 100 degree hot tub in near freezing temperatures. And the lower your heater is set, the less it has to work to get there.

Trap the Heat

Keep it in the hot tub! This is easily accomplished with a quality cover, whose sole purpose is to retain the heat in your hot tub when you’re not using it. Novel idea, right? Make sure that your cover fits properly — that it was specifically designed for your hot tub model. Check the seams and hinges to be sure they’re sealing properly so you’re not losing any heat. And, if you need a new cover, consider purchasing one with a thicker foam insulation for added heat retention.

Other Tips

Here are a few more things you can do to reduce your hot tub energy costs in the winter:

• Turn all the air controls off when you’re done in the hot tub because the air valves draw from outside air
• Add insulation in your hot tub cabinetry
• Put up a wind break of some kind to keep the cold breeze off your hot tub
• Add a bubble cover or floating thermal blanket to the surface of the hot tub water before covering it to keep even more heat in the water
