This classic has been helping people for thousands of years!
The predecessor to the contemporary traditional sauna originated in what is now Finland approximately 2,000 years ago. Early saunas were heat rooms with fire pits in the center. Sauna bathers waited for the fire to die down and the smoke to clear; then, they would enter the room. The sauna experience became a ritual for physical and spiritual cleansing. Over time, the fire pit was replaced by using hot stones that released heat when water was poured over them. In Finland today, it is estimated that there is about 1 sauna for every 3 people, roughly around 2 million. (There are more saunas in Finland than cars!)
A traditional sauna is a small room designed for experiencing extended heat sessions for purposes of cleansing, health, and relaxation. They can be constructed with several different types of wood, and all traditional saunas contain radiant heaters that heat the air directly. Temperatures range from 180°F to 220°F; and the humidity—when operating dry—is around 5%. When water is poured over the stones, it produces water vapor and creates the “wet” effect as the humidity climbs to between 20%-30%.
